Overview
Quip builds a mobile-first word-processing and collaboration app that combines documents, spreadsheets and chat with seamless online and offline collaboration. The product works across mobile and desktop devices and is designed so the software does not ‘live’ on the device while enabling real-time collaboration and tagging. Quip has grown largely through viral adoption and now has over 30,000 businesses using and paying for the service. Pricing is typically between $10 and $25 per user per month depending on features. The company says it is now ready to ramp up expansion and will use the new funding to grow the business more proactively. Recent hires and board additions reflect that push: Patrick Moran joined as Chief Customer Officer and John Lilly of Greylock joined the board. Quip is a modern word processor optimized for mobile (iPhone, iPad) while also available on desktop. It automatically adapts document layout to the size of the screen, offers in-app collaboration, chat-like threads of edits and messages, @mentions, and quick image and link insertion. The app works offline and synchronizes edits when a connection returns, and it asks users to sign in with Google to access contacts for collaboration. Quip currently exports PDFs and preserves formatting via copy-and-paste with Microsoft Word but does not provide a dedicated Word import/export. The product is offered freemium: free for personal use and $12 per month per user for a business license. An Android app is in development, and the team envisions expanding beyond word processing into spreadsheets, presentations, and broader integrated productivity workflows.
