RadianceTx (Radiance Therapeutics, Inc.) is commercializing the Beta Ophthalmic System, a device designed to topically apply beta irradiation to trabeculectomy and MIGS implantation sites to prevent postoperative scarring. The system is intended to down-regulate fibroblasts that cause scar tissue, keeping drainage channels open and maintaining reduced intraocular pressure. RadianceTx says the device requires only 25 seconds for beta therapy application, minimizes stray dosing to non-target tissues, and eliminates medical staff exposure to hazardous chemotherapy drugs. Beta therapy has been validated in three randomized controlled trials involving 728 patients; a recent study reported patients receiving beta irradiation were 5.5 times more likely to have lower intraocular pressure at one year versus standard care. The company plans to use new financing to fund development and begin commercial development of the Beta Ophthalmic System. RadianceTx cites a large and growing glaucoma device market and notes the MIGS device market is projected to reach $1.36 billion by 2022; the company is reported from Tucson, Ariz. & London and is a Delaware corporation.
