Raycast
3rd Floor 1 Ashley Road, Altrincham, Cheshire, WA14 2DT, United Kingdom
Overview
Raycast began in London in 2020 and started as a Mac-only, developer-focused launcher offering a "shortcut to everything" via a keyboard interface and user-built extensions. The product has evolved into a prosumer productivity tool with AI features (Raycast AI and AI Chat) that let users query multiple LLMs centrally, including GPT-4, Claude, Llama and Gemini. Raycast offers a free tier and an $8/month Pro plan that adds cloud sync, a translator, custom themes and Raycast AI; the company said the Pro plan was pivotal to the latest fundraise but declined to disclose revenue. The company claims "hundreds of thousands" of daily active users and a community of more than 20,000 developers building extensions. Raycast has about 30 employees (roughly 75% engineers) with the team based in Europe and the two founders located in London. The company is expanding beyond Mac to iOS (alpha and waitlist, broadly available early next year) and Windows, and is doubling down on AI as part of that expansion. Raycast builds a desktop productivity platform for developers with a command-line-inspired interface that helps users quickly find and update information and automate day-to-day processes. The software enables actions like creating and modifying Jira issues, merging GitHub pull requests, and finding documents via keyboard shortcuts, positioning itself as a developer-focused equivalent of macOS Spotlight. Raycast released an Extensions API and Store (public beta then public launch) allowing developers to build and share custom extensions; the community built more than 100 extensions in one month connecting to services like Figma, GitHub, Chrome, Notion, YouTube, and Twitter. The company says daily active users grew from 130 in October 2020 to over 11,000 within 12 months, with more than 20 million actions performed on the platform. Founded in 2020 by former Facebook engineers Thomas Paul Mann and Petr Nikolaev, the team currently consists of 12 members and plans to scale hiring. With the new funding, Raycast plans to build its developer community, accelerate platform growth, expand to teams via private extension stores and team features, while remaining focused on individual developers. Raycast is a Mac-only desktop productivity app that aims to be the quickest way for developers to complete common non-coding tasks. The software surfaces keyboard-driven actions to create and modify Jira issues, merge GitHub pull requests, find documents, manage system settings, and perform complex calculations. It supports integrations with Asana, Jira, Zoom, Linear, G Suite, Calendar, GitHub and Reminders, and emphasizes a network of extensions to encompass users’ workflows. Raycast has launched into public beta and is free while in beta; the company plans to introduce a monthly subscription later but has not disclosed pricing. The team is rolling out a developer program for early access to its API and says it will double down on building extensions. For now the company is focused on individual users, with possible future expansion to a teams-level enterprise product to aid onboarding and orientation.
