Oohlala provides tailored mobile apps for individual universities that consolidate moderated message boards, faculty contacts, class information and locations, safety alerts, and other campus services into a single platform. Founder and CEO Danial Jameel developed the concept while working in Student Life at the University of Toronto. The company serves more than 200 customers across eight countries and is profitable; it tripled in size last year and two-thirds of customers signed on for three-year contracts. Oohlala says its apps can improve student engagement and retention — an internal study found app users had significantly lower dropout rates. Encouraged by YC partners to expand, the company plans to scale distribution and pursue market-leader status. The recent funding is intended to help offer the mobile-first university companion to more students.
