Realm builds the Realm Mobile Platform: a real-time distributed mobile database and an Object Server with built-in serverless compute that enables live, synchronized, and offline-capable mobile apps. Its mobile object database has been installed more than 3.5 billion times across apps such as Starbucks, SAP, eBay, Intel and Alibaba, and the platform powers experiences for more than a billion users. Realm’s Object Server keeps app data as “live objects,” updated automatically in real time, supports server-side logic that responds to data streams, and handles asynchronous data with built-in conflict resolution for robust offline experiences. The company positions the platform as a logical extension to 5G and evolving edge-cloud architectures, arguing that forward-deployed cloud capabilities at the network edge will deliver highly responsive, immersive real-time user experiences. As part of that strategy, Realm announced a strategic investment and collaboration with Ericsson Ventures to develop edge cloud services that improve mobile applications and the network experience. Investors in the round also include Khosla Ventures and Scale Venture Partners. Realm builds a compact (under 1MB) mobile database that runs directly inside apps on smartphones and other smart devices. Because it lives in-app, Realm says it remains available offline, is faster and more private than external databases, and can reduce costs by avoiding external database calls. The company positions its solution as cross-platform compatible and simpler than legacy competitors such as SQLite. Realm came out of stealth in July and reports it is running on 100 million devices; customers include Groupon, BuzzFeed, Intuit, Zynga, Coinbase and Expensify. Founded in 2011 after Y Combinator and based in San Francisco, Realm was started by two former Nokia employees. The company plans to use the funding to double headcount from 21 employees by year-end, expand into additional markets and platforms, and ramp up sales efforts.
