Overview
Realtime is a freemium developer framework for building live web and native applications using persistent, bi-directional connections. It was developed by a company called “Internet Business Technologies” and is led by CEO Andre Parreira; the platform runs on ORTC and xRTML and supports WebSockets with AJAX fallbacks, SSL, and APIs for Node.js, ASP.net, Java, and PHP as well as iOS, Android and Windows Phone. The company says it currently powers 2,000 real-time client applications, has signed over 1,000 developers for its beta, and that partners collectively enable 120 million user connections. Realtime’s approach creates an abstraction layer so developers can build real-time functionality without changing underlying web technologies. The firm is launching its developer platform in the U.S. after previously being available only outside the country and plans outreach through conferences, hackathons, and competitions. Funding is intended both to scale the company and to help build the broader industry ecosystem needed for the “live web.”
