Rediscovery Life Sciences (RLS) is a Raleigh, N.C.-based clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on identifying and repurposing existing drugs with strong safety profiles. Its lead program is developing suramin for diuretic-resistant acute kidney injury (AKI). Animal studies cited by the company show that suramin improves outcomes in AKI by blocking inflammation, blocking cell death and stimulating reparative processes. Suramin is currently approved outside the United States as a treatment for tropical diseases, and numerous research and clinical studies have confirmed its safety. RLS will use the $4.5M Series B to expand and support a Phase 2 clinical trial of suramin and plans to initiate the trial early in the fourth quarter. In conjunction with the financing, Anita Watkins, JD, and Dr. Sunil Desai joined RLS’s board of directors.
