Overview

Redoxblox is a San Diego company that develops low-cost thermochemical energy storage systems (TCES) designed to accelerate industrial decarbonization and meet long-duration grid storage needs. Its TCES units store energy both chemically and as heat at very high temperatures and can discharge continuously or on demand directly into industrial processes or for electricity generation. The company raised $40.7M in a Series A to expand operations and broaden its business reach. The round was led by Prelude Ventures and joined by Imperative Ventures and New System Ventures, with existing backers Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Khosla Ventures also participating. Redoxblox announced the appointment of Pasquale Romano, formerly President and CEO of ChargePoint and a member of the U.S. National Infrastructure Advisory Council, as its new CEO. Romano will lead the company through its next phase of growth, targeting key industrial heat and long-duration grid-scale storage markets. RedoxBlox develops high-temperature thermochemical batteries that store energy in a proprietary metal oxide material heated to 1000–1500°C, releasing heat and oxygen on charge/discharge to deliver electricity or industrial heat. The system targets decarbonization of hard-to-electrify industrial heat (cement, steel, food & beverage, refining, chemicals) and ultra-low-cost grid storage by acting as a drop-in replacement for natural gas in existing infrastructure. The company says its energy densities compare to lithium-ion at a fraction of the cost. RedoxBlox is partnering with UC San Diego, EPRI and Dow to demonstrate long-duration grid and industrial applications, including a UCSD-hosted turbogenerator demonstration offering up to 24 hours of storage and an industrial-scale project at Dow’s West Virginia plant. The firm is backed by climate investors including Khosla Ventures, Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Red Cedar Ventures.
