Reduced Energy Microsystems (REM) builds asynchronous, ARM-compatible chips that dynamically throttle voltage and performance to improve energy efficiency—claimed at roughly 3–4x depending on the application. Their design uses standard industry tools so the implemented ARM cores look familiar to programmers and does not rely on exotic fabrication processes. Founders include software head Eleazar Vega-Gonzalez and CEO William Koven, who previously worked at Intel. REM is one of Y Combinator’s latest picks and was connected to Draper Associates via the accelerator. The company says the physical chip work is largely complete and is focusing on integration with products such as police body cameras, security cameras, drones, and DVRs. REM expects prototypes and integration testing with customers by the end of the year and is using seed capital to accelerate those commercialization efforts.
