RefME offers a web and iOS/Android app that lets users scan book barcodes or search by title/author/ISBN to generate citations, add notes/quotes, and sync lists via its cloud service. The product supports many reference types (books, journals, films, webpages, legal cases, etc.) and automates citations in more than 7,000 academic formats. The company has built an API that aggregates dozens of public and licensed databases and is crowdsourcing edits to create a more accurate reference database. RefME reports roughly 800,000 registered users and an average of 10,000 new users per day, and operates a 36-person team in London. Management says it will use data and vertical-search analytics on what students read to sell insights to universities, institutions and publishers. The startup plans to scale globally and is preparing to raise a Series A.
