Overview
Remind (formerly Remind101) is a San Francisco-based mobile communication product that provides messaging for teachers, students and parents. Led by CEO Brett Kopf and VP of Growth David Kopf, the service helps teachers extend their classrooms and connect with students and parents across all grade levels and institution types. The company closed a $40m Series C and has raised $59m in total to date. Remind intends to use the funds to expand its product internationally, grow its product and engineering teams, and scale its community and support teams. The Series C round was led by existing investor Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers with additional participation from The Social+Capital Partnership and First Round Capital. Remind101 provides mobile apps for Android and iOS that enable teachers to send secure, private reminders to students and parents via text and email. Launched out of Imagine K12 by brothers Brett and David Kopf in late 2011, the service is free to teachers and operates without requiring district approval. The platform has grown to 10 million teacher, student and parent users and now delivers over 65 million messages per month, adding about one million users per month over a recent four-month span. The company intends to keep the core platform free while building premium features to monetize later, such as mobile paperwork signing, permission-slip handling, payments and family polls. With the new funding the founders plan to ramp hiring and double their current team of 15 over the next year, with a particular focus on sales, business development and product development. Remind101 offers a mobile-first communication platform (iPhone, iPad, Android) that lets teachers send real-time or scheduled reminders, hide personal phone numbers, and create class groups for students and parents. The product focuses on simplicity and privacy while handling classroom notifications, permission slips and other administrative messages. The startup reports adoption at roughly 30,000 schools and about six million student and parent users, with the user base on track to send over 200 million messages in a year. The company currently has a team of 14 and plans to expand headcount and its product lineup, working on tools to speed document uploads and streamline administrative tasks like permission slips and hall passes. Longer-term, the founders envision Remind101 becoming a virtual switchboard for teacher-student and teacher-parent communication.
