Remote Year

1331 Hilary Ln, Highland Park, IL, 60035, United States

Overview

Remote Year runs 4-, 6- and 12-month work-travel programs that move cohorts of professionals through a series of global cities, spending one month in each location. Programs are offered for a down payment plus $2,000 per month and include connectivity supports such as SIM cards and ensured Wi‑Fi, as well as Employer Success specialists to help participants obtain employer approval. Since launching in 2014, Remote Year has hosted over 2,500 “Remotes” and currently operates in 12 cities including Mexico City, Medellin, Lima, Santiago, Split, Lisbon, Valencia, Cape Town, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Chiang Mai, and Kyoto. The company emphasizes building a professionally focused community and structures transit and local experiences to respect the work week and productivity. Remote Year says it will use new funding to grow participation globally and to explore new products and sales channels. Leadership projects long-term community growth to over one million people. Remote Year operates yearlong programs that move cohorts of remote workers to a different city and country each month, providing travel, accommodations and workspaces. The program began after founder Greg Caplan announced the idea and attracted 25,000 applicants for the first cohort of 75, which recently completed its year. The company has expanded to 500 traveling professionals across six programs. Participants pay a $5,000 downpayment plus $2,000 per month for the first 11 months; fees are intended to cover travel, living accommodations and workspace with internet. Remote Year’s team is currently about 85 people and is fully distributed with no central headquarters. Using the new funding, the company plans to grow participant volume, continue hiring, and build physical infrastructure such as coworking spaces in markets that lack them (for example, a beachfront coworking space in Split, Croatia). The cohorts are vocationally diverse, with many engineers, designers and a large marketing contingent, plus journalists, writers and a few lawyers.
