Overview
Renergi commercialises a patented grinding pyrolysis process originally developed at Curtin University’s Fuels and Energy Technology Institute. Its technology converts municipal solid waste and forestry/agricultural residues into crude pyrolysis oil (sold as liquid fuel) and biochar (sold as a soil conditioner). The company is designing, building and will operate a 1.5 tonnes-per-hour demonstration distributed energy‑from‑waste plant in Collie, Western Australia. The plant is sized to process about 4,000 tonnes/year of municipal waste and 8,000 tonnes/year of biomass. Renergi has progressed from pilot projects with prior ARENA support and now aims to demonstrate a scalable process for regional and smaller towns. The project targets landfill avoidance, displacement of fossil fuels and emissions reduction. Design work will commence this year with operations expected within two years. Renergi commercialises a suite of bioenergy technologies originating from Curtin University’s Fuels and Energy Technology Institute. Its core products and technology foci include biomass gasification for distributed power and heat, biomass pyrolysis and refinery to produce biochar, bio-oil and advanced biofuels, and co-firing biomass with coal. The company is developing a pilot-scale production facility that will include a 100 kg per hour biomass conversion (pyrolysis) unit and a complementary 20 litre per hour biorefinery unit. Renergi’s process incorporates steel grinding balls in a rotating biomass conversion unit to break down feedstock and enable simultaneous gasification, operating at low temperatures and near-atmospheric pressure to improve safety and reduce energy and capital costs. The approach targets on-site conversion of agricultural waste and mallee into green bio-crude that can be refined into high-quality transport biofuels at a central refinery. The technology is being scaled with public support and is positioned for potential export opportunities and commercialisation within Australia’s biofuels industry.
