Overview
Renovare Fuels has built a process that converts biogas — incorporating CO2 — into liquid drop-in fuels (diesel, sustainable aviation fuel) that are physically and chemically similar to conventional fossil fuels and require no engine modifications. The technology was developed at the University of South Florida in conjunction with NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy and proved successful in a 2017 landfill trial in the U.S. Renovare says its fuel can achieve a lifecycle emissions reduction of up to 97%. The company plans to scale via modular installations at landfill and anaerobic digester sites across the UK and Europe to support international net-zero targets. Late in the year Renovare announced a £9 million advanced renewables processing plant in Craigmore, Co. Londonderry (Northern Ireland) scheduled for 2024, expected to produce close to 2 million litres of advanced renewable biofuels annually. It has an ambitious five-year plan to deploy a further 48 projects and generate up to 35 million litres of biodiesel per year.
