Restate builds a lightweight workflows-as-code platform that combines durable execution, virtual objects and durable promises on an event-driven foundation. Its small, single-binary engine sets up fault-tolerant communication between services and integrates with function-as-a-service platforms like AWS Lambda and Cloudflare Workers. The platform targets microservices architectures and use cases such as task queues, event processing and service orchestration where traditional workflow systems are too heavy. Restate shipped a v1.0 open BSL-licensed release and launched a hosted Restate Cloud into early access, currently available for free while the team explores monetization. The company plans to expand its SDK to more languages (it currently supports TypeScript, Java and Kotlin) and will use funding to hire and build out infrastructure. The founding team includes Apache Flink co-creators and committers who drew on stream-processing ideas to design a faster, more lightweight alternative to existing workflow platforms.
