Reveal Chat is a Seattle-based iOS app that facilitates anonymous conversations where users can gradually reveal their name or photo as they become more comfortable. Users sign up via Facebook, choose to chat with female, male or “anyone,” and can opt into push notifications; chats begin anonymous showing only gender, age and distance. The app emphasizes user control and gradual disclosure as a way to combat loneliness and reduce anonymous trolling. CEO Nick Soman, an ex-Amazon product manager, founded the company after experiencing isolation during a paralytic illness. The 10-person team has raised a total of $1 million and lists high-profile backers including Microsoft Ventures, Rudy Gadre, Owen Van Natta and Porter Gale. In a private alpha of 6,000 users the app saw over 800,000 messages (about 130+ messages per user), more than 60% return rate and 80% of users eventually revealed their name or photo.
