Founded in 2020 by Dr Frederik Ceyssens and Prof Peter Janssen and headquartered in Leuven, ReVision Implant is developing Occular, a system that captures visual data with a miniature camera on a wireless headset and transmits processed signals to an implant of ultra-flexible microelectrodes in the visual cortex. The company’s thin-film electrode design aims to provide thousands of contacts for higher-resolution percepts while maintaining biocompatibility, with long-term rhesus monkey studies showing both biocompatibility and proof of efficacy. By targeting the cortex rather than the retina, ReVision seeks to serve patients whose retinas and optic nerves are wholly damaged and who cannot benefit from retinal therapies. The device has received an FDA Breakthrough Device designation, and ReVision has filed for an acute first-in-human study in Hungary with trials planned for Q3 2026. The company is building its own cleanroom to bring key manufacturing steps in-house and has a strategic collaboration with Cochlear to support development and commercialization efforts. Financially, the firm has combined the recent €4M private round with over €5.4M in publicly disclosed grants to fund clinical and operational scale-up.
