Overview
Ridejoy operates an online marketplace that lets drivers planning long-distance road trips sell extra seats to passengers traveling the same route. Drivers can post rides offered and passengers can post rides needed; payments are accepted via cash or credit card and Ridejoy takes a small cut of card payments. The service requires users to provide work and education history, a photo, and (via Facebook integration) mutual friends, and it uses reviews and references to build trust. Ridejoy debuted with BurningManRides.com, where 1,600 people signed up, 1,150 rides were posted and 400 rides completed over three weeks; five pilots also completed ten plane trips. The company is YC-backed and has raised seed funding to scale. Ridejoy plans to use the new capital to expand design and engineering capacity and grow operations beyond the West Coast.
