Overview
RFA UK (Rocket Factory Ltd.) is the UK subsidiary created to implement and operate launch-specific systems and test equipment for Rocket Factory Augsburg AG’s planned launches from SaxaVord Spaceport. Its RFA ONE vehicle is a three-stage, 30m-tall rocket that can deliver up to 1,300 kg to a 500 km polar orbit using Helix staged-combustion engines, stainless-steel tanks, standardised components and the Redshift OTV. The company will use the awarded funds to develop and operate infrastructure and test equipment needed to enable launches from the SaxaVord site. RFA UK has exclusive access (via RFA AG) to SaxaVord’s ‘Fredo’ launch pad and plans to provide a regular cadence of launch services from that pad. The organisation anticipates creating around 90 skilled local jobs when the spaceport reaches full operational capability. The firm is positioning itself as an early commercial orbital launch provider in mainland Europe from the UK territory. Rocket Factory Augsburg is developing the RFA ONE microlauncher and operates as a launch service provider. In May 2023 the company completed an upper-stage hot first test, which it says was the first of its kind in Europe. RFA secured a €30 million convertible debt investment from KKR. The funding is intended to complete its launchpad at SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland and to bring the RFA ONE microlauncher to that site. CEO Stefan Tweraser said the investment validates RFA’s business model and advances Europe’s independent access to space. KKR highlighted the team’s technical milestones and focus on cost leadership as reasons for backing the company.
