Roomkey
720 Centennial Avenue, Elstree, Borehamwood, England, WD6 3SY, United Kingdom
Overview
Roomkey operates a mini metaverse: invite-only social event spaces where up to 40 people mingle in 3D rooms with animated avatars and voice chat, accessible via iOS, Android, and the web. Users create a character, join events, converse with an entire room or at individual tables, and avatars make gestures while speaking. The product is not full virtual reality but looks like a VR experience and is designed to reduce social anxiety by eliminating the need to turn on cameras. Roomkey plans recurring programming including virtual art galas, weekly entrepreneurship breakfasts, a venture-capital talk show, musician mixers, diversity meetups, podcasts, fundraisers, and other live events, and can stream video to livestream viewers when warranted. Founder Don Stein began the product as Teeoh and rebranded to Roomkey after developing its audio engine over a couple of years; Biz Stone is an investor and will host a May 27 Social Entrepreneurship Festival as a press relaunch. The company has raised $5.3 million to date and has 10 employees.
