RunSafe grew out of DARPA research into defending critical infrastructure and commercialized its techniques into a product called Alkemist. The company hardens software binaries by making every instance functionally identical but logically unique, relocating functions and memory so exploits cannot locate targets and replicate across machines. RunSafe says this approach eliminates an entire class of attacks rather than merely detecting compromises. It works with hardware manufacturers to install protections at the factory and with operators such as data center customers to protect critical infrastructure. The company launched at the end of 2015, released its first product version last year, and today released Alkemist as a self-install product to broaden adoption. RunSafe currently counts a dozen customers, protects hundreds of thousands of machines, and expects to cross one million protected machines by the end of the year; it has raised $2.4 million in seed investment.
