SAALG Geomechanics develops Daarwin, a web platform that combines machine learning, real-time data analysis and high-performance cloud computing to store, manage and predict terrain behaviour for planning, design, execution and maintenance of civil works. The product aims to reduce geotechnical uncertainty, improve safety and efficiency, and enable optimisations such as anticipating anomalies and predicting tunnelling advance rates. SAALG is expanding Daarwin’s functionality into tunnel-boring machines with strategic support from ACCIONA to move toward autonomous TBM-assisted excavation. The company’s technology is already used in projects such as HS2 and in markets including Singapore and Japan, and it has participated in over 50 projects across more than 15 countries. Since its founding in 2016 the team has grown to more than 20 people (having doubled since early 2022) and the company has leveraged total capital of more than €5M to date. The product helps anticipate catastrophic or substantial changes caused by ground movements, allowing corrective action during construction to reduce uncertainty in schedules, improve safety, and optimize material use. SAALG estimates its solution can save more than 10% of project costs and up to 20% on foundations for large buildings or subterranean levels, while also reducing CO2 emissions. The company plans to develop new functionalities for Daarwin to make the tool more efficient across the full project lifecycle from planning and design to construction and maintenance. SAALG aims to become a global platform of large volumes of geotechnical data and to make its technology an international standard for the construction sector. SAALG estimates the software can deliver more than 10% savings on civil works and up to 15% savings on foundations for large buildings with underground levels. The current software is a project case version; the company plans to launch the first commercial version to allow collaborative, real-time access across construction value-chain participants. CEMEX Ventures and existing investors support the company’s commercialization and international project execution plans.
