Safe Catch

Overview

Safe Catch Tuna, founded by Sean Wittenberg in 2004 with co-founder Bryan Boches, developed a patented real-time screening technology to detect mercury levels in fish and pivoted to manufacturing in 2015. The company pledges its branded tuna products have the lowest mercury levels and says it screens more than one million fish per year, compared with roughly 200 fish a year tested by the FDA and EPA. In two years Safe Catch scaled from zero to distribution in about 10,000 U.S. stores, launched 22 SKUs, and reports doubling sales each year. Its products are slow-cooked to retain nutrients and natural oils, are BPA-free, contain no pyrophosphates or additives, and have found traction with paleo and Whole30 consumers. Safe Catch is expanding its mercury-tested seafood line to include seasoned tuna pouches using real spice blends, Ahi canned tuna, and canned and pouched salmon. The company positions its screening as a faster, lower-cost alternative to week-long lab tests that cost about $100 per fish, enabling scalable lower-mercury canned and pouched seafood.
