Safi Biotherapeutics is a pre-clinical cell therapy company developing bio-manufactured red blood cells (mRBCs) with targeted immuno-phenotypes for multi-unit, chronic transfusion indications and universal donor use. The company targets indications including sickle-cell disease, thalassemias, chemotherapy-related anemia, and acute trauma or surgical transfusions. Launched in 2020 as part of the U.S. Department of Defense On-Demand Blood program, Safi and its government program partners have demonstrated feasibility of an allogeneic, stem-cell sourced mRBC product at multi-unit transfusion scale. Safi has received DoD funding to advance the technology and is now accelerating clinical production and the regulatory path toward IND submission and initial clinical trials.
