Sana Health

2051 Dogwood Street, Suite 220, Louisville, CO, 80027, United States

Overview

Sana Health develops an audio-visual relaxation mask that uses audio waves to stimulate parts of the brain to treat chronic pain. The company is conducting clinical trials for fibromyalgia (including a Duke University study) and a broader neuropathy study at Mount Sinai Health System. A Colorado pilot study of 20 patients reportedly showed the device had three times the efficacy of the leading fibromyalgia drug without the drug’s side effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the product for sale as a “general wellness” device. Sana expects trial results to be available this fall and aims to obtain market clearance as a clinical treatment in the second quarter of 2021. Financially, the company raised $5.8 million in new venture funds and has raised a little more than $13.63 million over six rounds since 2017. Sana Health develops the Sana Sleep smart goggles, a padded-goggle device that emits pulsed light and sound and uses biometric feedback (pulse and breathing) to trigger brain patterns for deep relaxation and sleep. The goggles customize signals to the individual and the company reports that after about four uses wearers can fall asleep within ten minutes and sleep through the night. Sana has been testing the device with athletes in training and plans a consumer launch in Q2 2018 with a retail price near $400 per pair. The company is pursuing classification as a medical device with the U.S. FDA and says it will spend time understanding which distribution channels are best suited for the product. CEO Richard Hanbury developed the technology partly to address his own chronic pain and sleep issues, and the product is built on 24 years of sleep research and subject trials. Financially, Sana recently closed a $1.3 million seed round and had previously raised $450,000, including from the HAX hardware accelerator.
