Sanivation operates a circular-economy sanitation platform that treats faecal sludge and blends it with sawmill and agricultural by-products to produce high-performance solid fuel briquettes. These briquettes burn longer and more efficiently than firewood, cutting industrial customers’ fuel costs by 10–30% while offering a cleaner alternative to biomass and charcoal. The company partnered with Nakuru County to launch a pilot plant in Naivasha in 2018 and is now scaling that facility to meet growing demand. Once expanded, the Naivasha plant is expected to process waste generated by 100,000–130,000 households, easing pressure on municipal wastewater systems and reducing pollution around Lake Naivasha. Sanivation’s integrated waste-to-value model aims to deliver both environmental benefits and long-term financial sustainability as urbanization accelerates in Kenya. The firm is led by CEO and co-founder Emily Woods and is positioning itself to replicate this model across the region.
