Santero is a Charleroi, Belgium–based spin-off of the Université libre de Bruxelles focused on developing antibiotics against multi-drug resistant infections. Founded by Cedric Govaerts and Abel Garcia-Pino, the company is advancing first-in-class inhibitors aimed at treating infections that current recent antibiotic classes do not address. The founders highlight the gap that since 2000 only five new antibiotic classes have been marketed and none target the Gram-negative bacteria responsible for many AMR infections. Santero intends to use proceeds from its recent financing to further develop its lead inhibitor programs toward clinical advancement. The company says its work will add new treatment options to improve patient survival and recovery from multi-resistant bacterial infections. It raised funding in 2023 to support these development plans.
