Overview
Sapheon develops the VenaSeal Sapheon Closure System, a minimally invasive, single-use kit that treats venous reflux by tumescent-free, transcatheter delivery of a proprietary medical adhesive to the great saphenous vein. The company is focused on providing an alternative to surgery and thermal ablation that eliminates the need for sedation, tumescent anesthesia, and harsh chemicals. VenaSeal has received CE Mark approval (September 2011) and has been used to treat over 1,000 veins in patients in Europe and Hong Kong without tumescent anesthesia or post-procedure compression hose therapy. Sapheon recently completed full enrollment (242 patients) in its U.S. pivotal 1:1 randomized study across 10 clinical sites comparing VenaSeal to radio frequency thermal ablation. The VenaSeal system is not commercially available in the United States. Sapheon’s stated mission is to develop new approaches and disruptive technologies for the treatment of vascular disease, addressing a condition that required over 550,000 surgical procedures worldwide in 2012.
