Overview
SAVRpak is a San Juan Capistrano–based food tech company that makes a stick-on pad about the size of a napkin containing moisture-absorbing compounds to prevent condensation and keep food fresh. The paks are made of plant fiber, water, paper and a super absorbent polymer (SAP), and the company says the entire pad is food-safe and edible. SAVRpak reports the tech can extend shelf life for strawberries, microgreens, arugula, peppers and mini cucumbers by four to 10 days; a UC Davis study found the paks reduced excess moisture in romaine lettuce by 24% and extended shelf life by 18%. For takeout applications the pads are frozen before placement to improve heat-energy absorption. The company has five publicly announced partnerships and is in the final stages of a trial with a major berry distributor that it expects to announce this fall. SAVRpak drew $3.5 million in Series A funding from billionaire investor Mark Cuban, expects the pads to sell for just a few cents each in bulk, and is investigating a new SAP to make the product compostable.
