Scale AI is a Montreal-based consortium of more than 500 industry partners, research institutes, universities, and startups that acts as Canada’s AI Global Innovation Cluster. The organization does not build a single product; instead, it deploys capital and expertise to co-finance concrete AI applications that improve supply-chain performance in sectors such as manufacturing, retail, agriculture, aviation, and logistics. Since its launch in 2019, Scale AI has backed over 90 projects with more than $500 million in combined investments, 62 percent of which came from private-sector participants. In 2022 alone, it invested $204 million across 33 projects, marking a record year for the cluster. Scale AI also develops workforce-development programs to grow Canada’s pool of AI-skilled talent and supports small and medium-sized enterprises in adopting advanced technologies. Led by CEO Julien Billot, the organization is funded through a mix of federal and provincial government contributions and matching industry dollars. Its long-term goal is to foster globally competitive Canadian AI champions while building an inclusive, innovation-driven economy.
