Scanwell Health

800 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 200, Los Angeles, CA, 90017, United States

Overview

Scanwell Health builds smartphone-enabled at-home diagnostic tests, including a urine-based screening test for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Its early test is being used by researchers at Johns Hopkins, the Cleveland Clinic, the University of Pennsylvania and Kaiser Permanente as part of the NIH-funded CRIC study. The company’s kit lets patients test from home using a urine test and their smartphone to enable earlier diagnosis and monitoring of CKD. Scanwell is advancing development, validation, and clinical studies ahead of a submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The company recently received a $1.6M National Institutes of Health Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to accelerate that work. Scanwell’s product is positioned to address a large unmet need: more than 30 million Americans have some form of kidney disease and roughly 90% are unaware of it. Scanwell Health provides a smartphone-enabled at-home urine test and app that detects leukocytes and nitrites to indicate possible urinary tract infections (UTIs). The company’s UTI test is the only FDA-cleared over-the-counter urine testing app, delivers results in as little as two minutes, and reports diagnostic accuracy comparable to clinic urinalysis. Scanwell pairs its test with a partnership with Lemonaid Health so users can be immediately connected to telemedicine clinicians for diagnosis and prescription treatment. The test is sold online at $15 per pack of three and is now available nationwide in all 50 states. Scanwell is pursuing additional diagnostics in its pipeline and has partnerships with Kaiser Permanente and the CRIC Study to expand at-home screening and monitoring for chronic kidney disease. The company says proceeds from its recent financing will support the national launch, development of new diagnostics, and hiring additional team members.
