Scarf provides maintainer-friendly tools for open-source software distribution, analytics, and commercialization, including its flagship Scarf Gateway. Scarf Gateway offers a single access point to public packages and artifacts on any registry while delivering advanced usage analytics that reveal which companies and cloud providers are interacting with code. The company plans to use the new capital to continue product development, expand the team and user base, and pioneer ways to help open-source projects financially sustain themselves. Since launching in March, over 900 packages have been added to the platform by more than 300 developers and organizations. Developers on the platform have collectively uncovered data showing over 25,000 companies interacting with their software, which Scarf says can drive growth and business opportunities for maintainers. Financially, Scarf announced $5.3M in new funding, taking total investment to $7.3M, and says the funds will support scaling and commercialization efforts. Scarf builds tools that give open-source maintainers visibility into who is using their projects, combining an NPM library (for docs telemetry and phone‑home/pixel tracking) with a registry‑layer product. The company pivoted from an initial package‑manager approach after community pushback and now focuses on sitting in front of registries like Docker Hub and GitHub Container Registry. By routing pulls through Scarf, maintainers can see which company made a pull, whether it came from a laptop or CI, the cloud provider, container runtime and the version pulled. Those signals are intended to help maintainers target commercial users, offer paid support or sell different versions. Scarf is launching this registry‑proxy product now while continuing to offer its telemetry library. Financially, the company recently closed a seed round to fund these efforts.
