Overview
ScienceMatters is a Swiss open-source publishing platform launched in February that allows scientists to publish technically solid observations across scientific contexts via a triple-blind review process. It focuses on publishing short, result-focused pieces rather than narrative stories and uses Matteric (patented in 2015), a network-based metric system, to score the impact of observations. Since launch it has published around 60 papers with more than 600 editors involved in the review process. The startup was accelerated by MassChallenge Switzerland and recognized by the European Commission. ScienceMatters completed a $380,000 seed round led by the Velux Foundation, which the team says funded submissions and covered publishing fees. The company has confirmed partnerships with the University of Zurich, the University of Bern and EPFL and is negotiating with universities to have them cover publishing charges for authors. The team is seeking additional capital from VCs, impact investors, philanthropists or charitable foundations to expand the platform's reach while avoiding a rapid exit.
