Overview

SCIenergy is a Dallas-based provider of building-efficiency software coupled with project-development services aimed at large property owners. Its platform structures Managed Energy Service Agreements (MESAs) so owners can execute retrofits with no upfront capital, effectively delivering “Energy-Infrastructure-as-a-Service.” To underwrite these projects, the firm combines its analytics with dedicated funding vehicles, having already accessed a $100 million facility with Mitsui USA and now arranging a new $400 million fund with another investor. Recent wins include a $6.6 million retrofit for Drexel University spanning 430,000 sq ft of labs and academic space and a partnership to cut energy use 23.6 % at the 320,000 sq ft 125 Maiden Lane office property. SCIenergy merged with Transcend Equity Development in 2012, installing Steve Gossett Jr. as chief executive. Management envisions turning utility bills into financing tools, broadening opportunities for contractors and financial institutions while minimizing risk for building owners. The company has attracted $62 million in equity funding to date, most recently securing a $12 million round led by Braemar Energy Ventures with Edison International and Mitsui USA joining the cap table.
