Overview

SciFluor Life Sciences is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company that applies fluorine chemistry to design differentiated small-molecule drugs. Its two lead compounds are SF0166, a topical integrin antagonist administered via eye drop for retinal diseases including AMD and DME, and SF0034, a neuronal potassium channel activator targeted at partial-onset epilepsy and KCNQ2 pediatric encephalopathy. The company recently received two U.S. patents covering those lead compounds. SciFluor says it will use proceeds from the financing to accelerate development and commercialization of the two leads and to expand its drug discovery and commercialization pipeline. Target disease areas include retinal disease, CNS disorders, pain, pulmonary and inflammatory disease. William Koster, PhD, was named Chairman of the Board and Omar Amirana is CEO; Allied Minds is SciFluor’s parent company. SciFluor Life Sciences develops late-stage fluorination technologies intended to improve drug properties including metabolic stability, potency, bioavailability and blood-brain barrier penetration. Its technology is based on research by Professor Tobias Ritter, the company's scientific founder and CTO, conducted in Harvard University's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. SciFluor holds an exclusive, worldwide license from Harvard to multiple late- or end-stage fluorination methods and to a portfolio of novel fluorinated compounds. The company raised $5M in its first funding round from Allied Minds to commercialize the technology. Initially, SciFluor will focus on partnering with biopharmaceutical companies and establishing collaborative programs for the synthesis of new fluorinated compounds. These programs aim to initiate, advance or improve preclinical drug candidates, according to Don Ciappenelli, Ph.D., General Manager.
