Overview

SciSports is a sports analytics company that provides football data intelligence and actionable insights for professional football organizations, players, media, and entertainment. Its SaaS platform offers applications for player scouting, performance analysis, recruitment and opponent analysis tailored to industry professionals. The company positions itself as an industry standard used to support decisions and actions across football operations. SciSports aims to improve on-pitch performance by enabling stakeholders to extract value from football data. In December 2022 SciSports raised growth capital to support product development and expansion. Management says the funding will be used to execute the product roadmap, scale solutions, and drive global expansion. SciSports is a football data platform and a 2012 spin-off of the University of Twente based in Enschede, The Netherlands. Its core products are SciSkill, an algorithmic index that analyzes weekly over 2,000 matches across 210 leagues to assess and predict player quality and impact, and BallJames, a real-time tracking system that generates 3D data from stadium video. The SciSkill Index adjusts the quality of roughly 350,000 players and the company analyzes existing international data from more than 300,000 players. BallJames uses fourteen stadium cameras to produce metrics such as pass precision, direction and speed, sprinting and jumping strength, player movements, and touch proximity. SciSports works with clubs and agents in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Portugal, Brazil, Germany and Italy and currently employs 45 people. The company will use the new funds to roll out the SciSkill Index worldwide and implement the BallJames data machine in stadiums in countries such as England and Germany. SciSports, a University of Twente spinout, develops BallJames, a tool that gathers 3D data of football matches by scanning the pitch with an MRI-like system to produce real-time data on players and the ball. BallJames tracks voxel-clouds through a virtual stadium and uses machine learning to identify players and game rules. The company partners with the university’s chair of Biometric Pattern Recognition to refine its technology. SciSports has signed Dutch clubs PSV Eindhoven, Vitesse, and Heracles Almelo to use the system. The startup raised €1.35 million in a seed round from unnamed investors and will use the funds to further develop its technology and support international growth. Management has highlighted potential applications beyond football, including American football, crowd control at airports, and media and entertainment.
