Overview
Scoopshot operates a crowdsourced on-demand photography marketplace and accompanying smartphone apps that let buyers create local, national and global photo assignments and pay mobile photographers who respond. The company pivoted from eyewitness reporting to a reverse marketplace focused on stock and timely photography. Launched in Finland in February 2011 with a global rollout the following January, Scoopshot supports Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. It claims 350,000 mobile photographers have joined the service. Brands including GANT, Greenpeace, and Nokia have used the platform to create assignments since the on-demand feature was introduced. The company plans to use new funding to grow worldwide and to ramp up its Finland-based presence in the U.S. and UK by expanding sales teams there. Scoopshot operates a crowdsourced on-demand photography marketplace and smartphone app that lets buyers post location- and time-sensitive photo assignments and users respond by uploading photos. The platform functions as a reverse marketplace for stock and timely photography: buyers create local, national or global tasks (local tasks free; national/global incur a small fee) and can pay extra to push notifications, extend task duration, or include a brand logo. All submitted photos are available to buy for $5 each, with photographers receiving a 50% revenue share. Scoopshot primarily targets media and brand customers—brands cited include Oxfam, Malibu, Fiat, and Vogel’s—and competes with services like Foap, Rawporter, and EyeEm. The Helsinki-headquartered company launched in Finland in February 2011 and reports a global network of over 280,000 mobile photographers and 283,000 app downloads across 177 countries. To date, 752,000 photos have been submitted and 180,000 sold; the app’s top earner has made €21,374 and 59 users have earned more than €1,000. The company says it will use new funding to accelerate international growth with a focus on the U.K., U.S., and German markets.
