Scout Alarm produces a $120 next-generation alarm system that is wireless, clean, simple, portable and does not require a landline. The product is positioned for renters and urban dwellers who may move frequently; Scout said units begin shipping in August. The company ran a private crowdfunding campaign on its own site after Kickstarter declined to host the project because it was not far enough along in preproduction. To date the campaign has attracted 596 backers who pledged $159,180 (described as near $160,000) and Scout reported about $140,000 of preorders in the first three weeks. Campaign traffic in the initial three weeks included 48,500 visitors and 36,500 unique visits. Scout has published blog posts on how it executed the private crowdfunding effort and said the campaign was continuing with roughly five days remaining, seeking about $20,000 more in preorders.
