Scratch Wireless launched with $5M in funding as a Cambridge, MA-based provider of a 'Wi‑Fi First' mobile service. The company offers free text, data and voice when users are on Wi‑Fi and pay-as-you-go cellular access with no contract when away from Wi‑Fi. Texting is free whether users are on a Wi‑Fi network or not. Through partnerships with manufacturers and network operators Scratch offers Android smartphones bundled with the free service. Leadership named in the coverage includes CEO Alan Berrey, chairman Eric Giler, VP of product development Michael DeJadon and VP of marketing Jon Finegold. Backers for the launch include CommonAngels, the founders and industry partners.
