Overview
Founded in July 2023 by marine scientist Jessica Giannotti, SeaDyes develops proprietary seaweed-derived textile dyes intended as sustainable, non-toxic alternatives to conventional petroleum-based dyes. The company joined The James Hutton Institute as a spin-in at the beginning of 2025 and operates from the Hutton’s Invergowrie campus, where it accesses laboratory space and technical support. SeaDyes has developed viable prototype dyes and engaged with over 100 potential customers while establishing multi-year R&D and commercial partnerships with industry players. The startup raised £200,000 with support from Scottish Enterprise and the Hutton, and has added staff including a textile innovation technician and a commercial champion to advance commercialization. It is seeking additional investment and partners to scale its technology and commercial activities.
