Overview

Segment provides a customer data infrastructure (CDI) platform that helps businesses collect, unify and connect first-party data to more than 250 marketing, analytics and data warehousing tools. The platform is used by thousands of companies across 71 countries, including customers such as Atlassian, Bonobos, Instacart, Levi’s, Intuit and Meredith. Led by co-founder and CEO Peter Reinhardt, the company employs over 350 people across offices in San Francisco, New York, Vancouver and Dublin. Segment plans to use the new funding to open multiple new offices across North America, EMEA and Asia-Pacific, grow its team, further develop its CDI and partner network, and invest in customer growth. Financially, the company raised $175M in a Series D, bringing total capital raised to date to $284M. Segment’s core product lets businesses send their online data to various analytics and marketing tools and combine that data with customer information from services like Stripe, Salesforce, Mailchimp and Zendesk. The company positions itself as a central customer data platform as companies adopt more specialized marketing and analytics tools. Segment is already used by more than 15,000 customers, including Intuit, Atlassian and Gap. It also supports an ecosystem of over 200 tools built on top of its platform, about 30% of which are created by partners. Leadership sees a significant opportunity to expand adoption beyond startups into large enterprises and to grow Segment into a broader platform for third parties. The company has raised multiple funding rounds and continues to attract investor support as it scales. Segment offers a single API that lets businesses send event-tracking data to hundreds of analytics, marketing and database tools via simple integrations, replacing repetitive provider-specific API work. The product grew out of an open-source library, Analytics.js, and the team pivoted to a simple analytics API after widespread adoption. Segment is used by customers including Conde Nast, Bonobos, and HotelTonight and currently processes 50 billion API calls per month. Its user base doubled over the past year to 4,000 active customers (those with at least three connections), and the company says revenue tripled in the past eight months. Today it provides 160 integrations across 20 categories and can load customer data into Amazon Redshift; it plans to add other data warehouses (Postgres, MySQL and others) and capture more customer data beyond in-app behavior. Following the new financing it plans to scale headcount and expand integrations and storage-platform support. Segment provides a customer data platform that collects, transforms, and routes customer data to more than 100 third-party analytics and marketing tools, internal systems, and a hosted SQL database. Led by CEO and co-founder Peter Reinhardt, the Y Combinator‑backed company is used by thousands of companies including Bonobos, Rdio, BaubleBar, RunKeeper, and Fool.com. Segment plans to expand its team and platform over the next year. The company is based in San Francisco, CA. Financially, Segment raised $15M in a Series A led by Accel Partners and has secured $17.6M in total funding to date. As part of the investment, Accel partner Vas Natarajan joined Segment’s board of directors. Segment.io began as an open-source library and pivoted to a hosted service after seeing strong developer interest. Its core product is a client SDK and backend that lets developers implement a few lines of code and toggle any analytics or marketing integration without recompiling or resubmitting apps. The company recently launched iOS and Android SDKs to extend that capability to mobile apps and announced partnerships with HubSpot and Marketo. Segment.io says it is serving over a billion API calls a month. Customers and integrators such as DrChrono and Customer.io have praised the simplified integration and reduced implementation time. Financially, the company has raised $580,000 from a group of investors including Y Combinator, Start Fund, General Catalyst Partners, SV Angels, and others.
