Select Star

584 Castro St #2064, San Francisco, California, 94114, United States

Overview

Select Star provides an automated platform that analyzes metadata and logs from Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, Databricks, Tableau, Looker and other tools to surface data context. The product automatically tags events, generates customers’ data models, creates column-level lineage, detects personally identifiable information and continuously inventories key data assets, models and business metrics. Its aim is to deliver a system of record that exposes significant database-level relationships and reduces manual configuration for enterprise data catalogs and governance. Select Star positions this context as a way to help enterprises become more data-driven when working with multiple, disparate datasets. The company counts customers including Block, Pitney Bowes, Fivetran, Opendoor and Handshake. CEO Shinji Kim said the new capital will fund product engineering, go-to-market and customer success, and the company plans to double its 20-person workforce by the end of the year. Select Star builds a SaaS platform that automatically documents datasets within customers' data warehouses and BI tools, generating metadata and offering full-text search. It surfaces heat-map signals that highlight which columns are most used by applications and which have the most queries, helping data teams find and prioritize relevant fields. The product also maps column usage to show how changes could cascade across applications and datasets, aiding safer schema changes. Founded in March 2020 by CEO Shinji Kim, Select Star came out of private beta and has a team of seven. The company raised a $2.5 million seed round to fund growth. Near-term plans focus on expanding the team and simplifying onboarding to make the platform easier to adopt by the end of the year.
