Semetric
176-179 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6HP, United Kingdom
Overview
Semetric operates Musicmetric, a real-time music-data analytics service that tracks roughly 600,000 artists and over 10 million releases and analyses social signals such as sentiment and sharing sources. Its dashboards are used by “thousands in the industry,” including major labels like EMI, broadcasters such as MTV, streaming sites like Last.fm, individual musicians, managers, smaller labels and promoters. The service aggregates both legitimate and BitTorrent sources to give rights-holders visibility into how and where music is being consumed. Semetric announced a £3 million ($4.7M) new investment and has raised $7.4M since being founded in 2008. New investor Imperial Innovations Group and existing backer Pentech Ventures participated in the round; Jon Edington of Imperial Innovations will join as a non-executive director alongside Gregory Mead, Marc Moens and Jeremy Silver. The company says it will use the funding to expand its music service, build additional entertainment-focused big-data products and potentially extend tracking to TV and film consumption online, while establishing itself across Europe and America. Semetric operates Musicmetric, a subscription desktop application that displays interactive charts derived from proprietary monitoring of social networks, P2P file‑sharing networks, reviews, comments and sentiment from millions of web sources. The core product provides measurement and analytical tools to help clients understand consumer behaviour and opinions online, and currently powers Musicweek’s weekly Artist Buzz Chart. The company plans to extend its applications and services further into the music industry and to explore other content sectors. The new funding is intended to expand Semetric’s data‑collection infrastructure, broaden its applications, and grow the team. Management has said the investment provides a well‑funded two‑year runway. Board and advisory changes accompanying the round include Pentech partner Marc Moens joining the board and former Last.fm COO Spencer Hyman joining the advisory board.
