Overview

Sencha provides application development frameworks and tools designed to enable companies to create rich Internet apps across a wide range of devices, including touch-based phones and tablets. The company is led by CEO Michael Mullany and is based in Redwood City, Calif. Sencha raised $15M in a Series B round to support its product and team growth. It plans to use the funds to enhance its products, hire additional developers and expand its Silicon Valley office premises. Joe Horowitz of Jafco Ventures will join Sencha’s board in conjunction with the funding. Existing investors Sequoia Capital and Radar Partners participated in the round. Sencha, formerly known as Ext JS, develops HTML5 frameworks and authoring tools for building cross-platform mobile web apps. Its Sencha Touch framework targets iOS and Android and aims to make web apps feel nearly native. The company recently added Sencha Animator, a CSS3-based animation authoring app that outputs pure CSS3 code and runs on WebKit browsers, making animations hardware-accelerated on iOS. Animator is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux in beta, with planned additional features such as a gradient maker and an advertiser-focused edition. Sencha will price a standard Animator license in the "low hundreds of dollars" per user. The product competes with tools like Adobe's Edge and Sprout's Advine.
