Serina Therapeutics, headquartered at the HudsonAlpha Institute in Huntsville, Ala., develops polyoxazoline (POZ) polymers that can be coupled to drugs to alter pharmacokinetics and prolong activity. Its technology can also target polymer-drug conjugates to receptors on cancer cells, enabling oncology-focused and other applications. The company closed a $9.5M financing round in January 2011 and intends to use the funds to advance its lead oncology candidate SER-203 into a Phase I human study in early 2012. Serina also plans to continue building its pipeline of novel polymer therapeutics. The company is led by President and CEO Randall Moreadith, MD, PhD. Its founders and managers were formerly key principals of Shearwater Polymers, which enabled nine approved polyethylene glycol (PEG) products for pharmaceutical partners.
