Shaper's first product, Origin, is a handheld CNC machine that leverages computer vision and augmented reality to make precision subtractive prototyping easier. Origin uses a rear camera and a specialty ShaperTape so the cutter can contextualize itself on almost any flat surface and a wide variety of materials. The device includes a touchscreen that visualizes the cutting space, lets users drag-and-drop designs, and a motorized cutting head that autocorrects positioning so users need only stay within a few inches of the intended path. Early prototypes were fabricated at MIT by co-founders Alec Rivers and Ilan Moyer, and CEO Joe Hebenstreit previously led product design for Google's Project Glass. Origin will go on sale with a $1,500 early pre-sale price and a later retail price of $2,099, with an on-sale date of August 23rd. The company raised a $3 million seed round and says it plans to raise additional capital to expedite production and continued research and development.
