Shield Therapeutics is a Wollerau, Switzerland-based specialty pharmaceutical company focused on development and commercialization of late-stage mineral-derived hospital pharmaceuticals. Its lead candidate is ST10-021, a novel stable complex of ferric iron in an oral formulation being developed initially to treat iron deficiency anaemia. The company raised €8.2m in financing from Inventages Venture Capital, scheduled in two equal tranches over the next two years. Shield intends to use the funds to conduct international Phase III trials and to file a marketing authorization application for ST10-021. Trials are planned to commence in the second half of 2011. Founded in 2008, the company is led by CEO Carl Sterritt, and Gunnar Weikert, Chairman of Inventages, will join the board in conjunction with the funding.
