Shippo
731 Market Street #200, San Francisco, California, 94103, United States
Overview
Shippo offers shipping-label generation, pickup scheduling and other logistics tools to help merchants without large logistics operations. The company serves clients including Bombas and Aesop, as well as sellers on Shopify and Etsy. Shippo has reached 100,000 customers. CEO Laura Behrens Wu framed the business as addressing a permanent shift toward greater e-commerce adoption and said the company aims to build an Amazon Prime–like experience for non‑Amazon sellers. The startup recently named Olivier Adler as chief financial officer. Financially, Shippo was valued at $1 billion following its latest fundraise. Shippo provides shipping-related software and services that help e-commerce companies buy postage and negotiate with carriers. The company leverages growing customer volume to secure better shipping deals and partner relationships, including a partnership with UPS secured before the new round. Shippo doubled its platform spend (GPV) last year, which TechCrunch says roughly tracks with revenue, implying likely top-line growth of about 2x. The company plans to double GPV again and to double headcount this year, adding around 150 people. Management intends to invest the new capital in platform integrations, international expansion (currently limited), and deeper focus on its core customer base. CEO Laura Behrens Wu said broader product expansion beyond shipping labels is possible but not an immediate priority. Shippo provides shipping software and services that sit between retailers and consumers, integrating with nearly five dozen shipping partners and platforms such as Amazon, Shopify and Wix. The company offers an API-driven product and a hybrid software-and-sales model, charging for software access and generating revenue from selected shipping spend. Shippo reported 100% year-over-year growth heading into its Series C and says its gross margins are roughly 80%, which the company cites as venture-ready economics. Management aims to raise Shippo’s profile in shipping the way Stripe did for payments and sees secular tailwinds from expanding online shopping. The firm hired Catherine Stewart as COO and, per CEO Laura Behrens Wu, will look to conserve cash while continuing growth amid broader economic uncertainty. After the new financing the company entered 2020 with a comfortable capital base to pursue those plans. Shippo provides an API and online app that lets merchants compare rates across USPS, FedEx, UPS and others, print labels, track packages and automate paperwork. The company serves customers including eBay, Ipsy, Martha Stewart and about 15,000 other customers. Shippo charges customers per label or a flat fee for a given number of shipments and says it did not disclose revenue figures. It reports 71% year-over-year growth per customer. CEO Laura Behrens Wu founded the company out of frustration with shipping hassles and positions Shippo to capture what it expects will be a $4 trillion e-commerce marketplace in three years. The company faces competition from Pitney Bowes, Stamps.com and Amazon’s shipping efforts. Shippo provides a multi-carrier shipping API and tools that enable merchants to manage shipping, with a working product, happy customers and growing volumes. The company reports usage up, retention up and low churn as signs of traction. Founders emphasize hiring and building an exec team to make growth repeatable and scalable. Shippo has made its seed and Series A decks public to help other entrepreneurs learn from their process. The team says its mission is to provide anyone and any business the technology to ship smarter. Operational focus includes improving hiring, processes and monitoring health via tools like Social Capital’s magic 8-ball analysis.
