Shone develops autonomous technologies for container ships aimed at assisting seafarers and improving ship efficiency rather than creating fully unmanned vessels. Its system primarily hooks into existing ship sensors, combines disparate data streams, and provides situational awareness and navigation assistance. The startup is retrofitting ships and is already working with a shipping company, and has signed a partnership with CMA CGM to collect data and add hardware devices. Shone plans to progress from situational awareness to recommending routes to save fuel and time, targeting fuel-efficiency gains with large environmental impact. The company attended Y Combinator and recently raised a $4 million round from investors including Alven, Liquid 2, Paul Graham, David Marcus, D. Scott Phoenix and The Refiners. For now the product focuses on deep-sea operations and incremental navigation-assistance features that could reduce the crew needed for continuous watch duties.
