ShopChat is a San Francisco, CA–based message commerce startup that emerged from stealth with a mobile shopping keyboard. Led by CEO and co‑founder Zephrin Lasker, the product combines chatting and shopping to let users share and shop brands such as Sephora, Guess and Foot Locker directly from their smartphone keyboards. The ShopChat keyboard is publicly available for free on the iOS App Store, supports major messenger apps (Apple iMessage, Facebook Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp, WeChat, Google Chat, Kik, Tango, Line, and others), and is launching on Google Play soon. ShopChat raised $1.25M in funding in a round led by Rakuten with participation from angel investors in Silicon Valley and Europe. Rakuten’s investment is described as strategic and includes a partnership under which ShopChat now powers Viber’s message commerce offering. The company is using the funds to expand its brand offerings.
